A little about 'gothic'
Anarchy and Alenski
H.G. Wells
I’ve spent many hours over the past few years writing my first novel. At first, it was just ‘therapy’ (something to do in the evenings after working an unrewarding job). Over time, it developed into an escape. The characters became friends and the plot evolved, from the intended single tale of action-adventure, into a series of spiritually interwoven novellas.
At the urging of my long-suffering wife, I finally finished, but now I feel a bit lost and lonely that I must say goodbye to these old friends.
I know, I can start another book, but it isn’t a rewarding pastime. All through school, and even during my career, when I finished a paper, someone would read what I had produced and give me feedback (good and bad). However, with a self-published book, the product lies unread along with countless others on the internet. Yes, it’s easy to publish a book, but it’s much harder, and very expensive, to get anyone to read it (it seems few people read books anymore). I can hire someone to ‘edit’ what I’ve produced, but my experience with this is disappointing in that the ‘editor’ simple subjects the text to computerized grammar and style tools. Coercing family and friends into reading it is fruitless since they will find little fault despite their general disapproval of glimpsing into the intimate thoughts of the old man.
So, farewell old friends. I wish you well in your lonely vigil awaiting someone to discover your value and warmth.
